March is National Nutrition Month
Fats and oils are part of a healthful diet, but the type of fat makes a difference to heart health, and the total amount of fat consumed is also important.  High intake of saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol increases the risk for coronary heart disease.  To decrease the risk of coronary heart disease, most Americans need to decrease their intake of saturated fat and trans fats.

The American Heart Association has launched its Bad Fats Brothers campaign to give consumers a new way to look at and remember which fats are bad, why they're bad and where they can be found.

BadFatsBrothers.com features Sat and Trans, two characters that represent the bad fats.

The site features:

Meet Sat and Trans:  Here you will find profiles on each brother.  Sat is the older brother who's been around awhile and Trans is the younger and sneakier brother.

Webisode:  Sat and Trans take you to one of their favorite places, the Bad Fats Brothers Diner.

Bad Fats Menu:  You can find samples of some of the brothers' favorite foods.  Each food item is listed with its total calories and amounts of specific fat.

Four Services Dental Hygienists Can Provide To Prevent Heart Disease in the 21st Century

1.  Tobacco Cessation
Ask. Advise. Refer. is the American Dental Hygienists' Association's (ADHA) national Smoking Cessation Initiative (SCI) designed to promote tobacco cessation intervention by dental hygienists.  As part of the Ask. Advise. Refer. program, dental hygienists refer their patients to tobacco quitlines, as well as to web-based and local cessation programs.

Tobacco Cessation Protocols for the Dental Practice (PDF)
This toolkit is designed to help you develop an office-wide tobacco cessation program.  The dental hygienist is most ideal person to implement and coordinate the tobacco cessation program in the dental practice.

2.  Nutrition Counseling/Obesity Prevention

Dental hygienists are in a perfect position to help treat the obesity epidemic in the United States.  The dental office provides a powerful setting for interventions aimed at reducing the prevalence of obesity and its health consequences.

Recommendations by a dental hygienist can be influential in patient dietary choices and physical activity habits.  The integration of diet screening, nutrition counseling, and referral into the dental hygiene practice are ways to improve oral and general health.

Healthy Eating and Physical Activity For A Lifetime:  A Guide to a Healthy Lifestyle is the California Dental Hygienists' Association's obesity prevention initiative which provides web-based nutrition resources and tools for dental hygienists to provide nutritional counseling based on the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

3.  Diabetes Prevention and Management
Dental hygienists are well positioned to deliver prevention messages, communicate the need for metabolic control, and facilitate multidisciplinary diabetes care.

Diabetes Management  is the California Dental Hygienists' Association's website which provides diabetes prevention and management resources.  Dental hygienists play an important role in educating diabetic patients about their disease.  As members of the health care provider team, hygienists are in an ideal position to provide patients with information on disease self-management as well as referrals to other health professionals when needed.

4.  High Blood Pressure Prevention and Control
Many people with high blood pressure do not see their primary care provider regularly, but may see a dental hygienist more often.  Dental hygienists have the opportunity to screen for hypertension control, advise patients about the importance of adhering to prescribed treatment, and refer patients when high blood pressure values are detected.

Prevent and Control High Blood Pressure is the California Dental Hygienists' Association's website to provide dental hygienists with resources to prevent and manage high blood pressure.
